To help keep trick-or -treaters safe, please follow these tips while driving this Halloween.
Be extra careful between 4 and 8 P.M- when most collisions with vehicle and young pedestrians happen.
Avoid distractions while driving-Don’t use your cell phones or mess around with your stereo. Wait until you’ve stop to call, text, ect.
Drive slowly- Don’t pass stopped vehicles because the driver might be dropping off or picking up children.
Watch for children darting into the street- Most young pedestrians don’t only cross the street at intersections.
Yield to young pedestrians- Don’t assume that children are going to stop. They might not see your vehicle or don’t know how to safely cross the street.
Let other drivers know what you are doing- Use your turn signals every time. And if you have to pull over to drop off or pick up kids, turn on your hazard lights.
Also Keep Your Own Trick-Or-Treaters Safe
Teach them how to safely cross the streets- They should look both ways and cross only at corners and crosswalks.
Brighten them up- Give them flashlights and glow sticks, and/or use reflective tape on their costumes, so drivers can see them.
Plan a route –discuss the route your trick-or-treaters will follow. Establish a time for children to return home. Or have a time and place to pick them up at.
Review Safety- Review trick-or-treating safety precautions, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules.
